Department specializes in early neonatal corrections of congenital heart defects and staged approach to univentricular heart. Annually there are approximately 500 procedures carried out, about 350 of which are operations performed with extracorporeal circulation. As a reference centre the Department treats children from south - east part of Poland. Corrections of complex congenital heart disease are carried out in children from the whole country as well as from abroad.
Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery provides the classes for medical faculty students as well as training for residents from the country and abroad (Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Germany). There is also a Student Scientific Association functioning by the Department whose members actively participate in clinical research and observe work of the team.

Scientific research which has been carried out in the Department for many years now include both basic science issues and clinical issues. They are focused around the following topics:

  • haemodynamic and morphological changes in the children with univentricular heart - determination of global and regional morphology and function of single ventricle throughout staged approach.
  • research into improving complex congenital heart defects operative techniques - development of modifications of some operations (Norwood procedure, Fontan operation), minimization of perioperative trauma caused by both surgical correction and extracorporeal circulation application.
  • improving diagnostic methods and determination the qualification criteria for earlier hemi-Fontan and Fontan operations more precise.
  • research in to the mechanism of the heart development and genesis of congenital heart diseases
  • experimental research into the protection of the immature heart during the period of ischemia
  • implementation of minimal invasive surgery methods for correction of some congenital heart defects
  • influence of prenatal diagnostics on outcome of operative treatment (mainly complex congenital heart defects)
  • research relating to heart surgery in children with low birth weight.
  • evaluation of late results of surgical treatment of congenital heart disease
  • experimental research into cardiac and skeletal muscle stem cells.
